Over the past year, over 5 million Americans have lost their SNAP benefits following the enactment of the Federal budget reconciliation law (One Big Beautiful Bill Act) in July of 2025. An estimated 1.2 million to 1.5 million children are among those who have lost access to food assistance.
At Neighbors Together, over 80% of our members are enrolled in SNAP.
Currently, we are serving 600 to 800 meals a day. Last week, we served 530 meals during one two hour lunch service -an unprecendented number for our team.
Our Meal Count Will Continue To Rise
We anticipate our meal count will rise significantly in November and December, and we will be here to continue to meet the need for our members.
We also know that we cannot fill the gap in these losses of SNAP benefits through meals in our soup kitchen alone. SNAP is a vital resource for our neighbors, and the changes in federal work requirements has been detrimental to millions of Americans. We are absolutely seeing this impact here in Brooklyn.
How You Can Support Our Work:
Today, we are launching our Holidays Without Hunger campaign to directly support the meals we are serving in our Community Cafe, and the continued increased need we are anticipating this holiday season.
Thousands of our neighbors will come to us during this time, and now more than ever before we are calling for your support of our on the ground work here in Brooklyn.
