New York City’s food pantries and soup kitchens, including Neighbors Together, are awaiting the release of federal funds from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP). Although a temporary funding freeze was lifted, FEMA has yet to distribute payments, leaving 95 organizations waiting for funds already spent.
Neighbors Together, which serves 700 meals daily in Ocean Hill/Brownsville, continues to provide essential meals to the community. “We are looking at around 200-300 families relying on these meals,” said Natalie Smythe, director of programs.
United Way NYC has urged New York’s congressional delegation to intervene, as legal experts call the funding delay unprecedented. Despite the delay, organizations remain committed to serving those in need.
